 Regional Meeting - 03/04/07

Approximately 45-50 exhibitors attended the CFA Southern Region Regional meeting held March 4 at the Foothill Feline show held in Simpsonville, NC.   I want to thank all the exhibitors and judges for their participation. An outline of the meeting is below:

1)      The Show Rule Quiz – Show rule refresher

a)      Clubs own a show date even when they are not holding a show.  FALSE

Clubs should notify their RD and National Scheduling Chair when they do not plan to hold a show.  The date will be considered “vacant” for the one year only and become available to other clubs for a one-time only show date. (Rule 12.03e)

b)      Clerks should be paid $80 for clerking 2 days of a 225 back to back show.  TRUE

(Rule 13.05d)

c)      An exhibitor can give away a kitten at a CFA cat show.  FALSE  

Cats or kittens may not be given away at CFA shows by CFA clubs or individuals other than those placed by incorporated humane associations. (Rule 13.14)

d)      A club must provide an officiating judge with an emergency or cell phone number during show hours only.  FALSE  

Emergency or cell phone numbers must be provided the day before the show also.

(Rule 16.05.1)

International Division cats in Europe require 75 points to Grand Champion and 25 points to Grand Premier.  FALSE

ID cats in Europe require the same number of points to Grand as mainland US. (Rule 9.03b)

e)      An exhibitor can provide a service to other exhibitors to enter extra cats as a show for the price of an entry fee + $10. 

Is this a violation of any show rule?  NO

Is this a right or fair thing?  NO

Just because an action does not violate a rules does not make it the right thing to do.

2)      April 28-28, 2007 Show – Last Show of the Season

a)      For the past month, exhibitors have been asking if the Daytona Beach Cat Fanciers would be holding their traditional show this April.

b)      The Daytona Beach CF will be unable to hold their April show this year as they could not find a show hall.

c)      Per Show Rule 12.03e, this date became “vacant’ for the one year only and is available to a club for a one time only show.  

d)      Using the outstanding list of clubs with outstanding show date requests, the Regional Director asked for clubs to volunteer if they were interested in putting on the show.  

e)      Space Coast CC and Platinum Coast CC located a show hall in Clearwater, Florida.  With approval from the National Show Scheduler, the show was approved to move forward to provide the Southern Region with a show to celebrate the end of the show season.

3)      June 9-10 Regional Awards Show

a)      Where: Richmond Virginia – Holiday Inn / Show Place

b)      The Regional Awards Committee is working furiously to finalize details.

4)      Regional Awards Show and Program Quiz – Meeting attendees passed with flying colors.

a)      How many of the last 6 regional awards show have made money

Show profits ranged from $1,000 to over $7,000 dollars.

b)      Regions expect to make money on the regional awards program.  FALSE

Show profits have covered regional awards program expenses in 5 of the last 6 years.  

c)      Regions price the banquet to make money.  FALSE

d)      The SR solicits donations from clubs and individuals all the time. FALSE

Since annual fund raising, donations have been solicited only for award sponsorship at the request of exhibitors and annual award assistance.  Regional shows and surcharges have been the primary income for the region.

e)      The region pays for the RD to go to shows. FALSE

f)        The region pays for RD room and meal at the regional awards banquet. FALSE

g)      Board Members expenses to Board meetings are paid.  TRUE  

5)      November 17-18 Southern Region Show 

a)      Why not holding a show with Region 1?

Region 1 and 7 cat fancier density and distances between Maine and Florida, Debbie Kusy and I felt that one show in each region provided CFA cat fanciers with better choices.

b)      What?

A single centrally located 450 cat show with junior showmanship, agility, and breed focus.

c)      Where?

Atlanta seemed a natural choice but was ruled out since Cotton States CC annual show is only 2 weeks prior to this date.    Southern Region shows in Pensacola, FL; Raleigh, NC; and Orlando, FL on adjacent weekends were also considered to minimize impact to these shows.  The Charlotte area was selected for it’s central location and International airport. 

d)      Who?

Gina Hargett is the November Regional Show coordinator.  She is currently working to locate a show hall.  If you or your club is interested, please contact her at cotnhill@cotnhill.com.

6)      CFA Review 

a)      What type of organization is CFA?  501C4 – A Social Not For Profit

b)      501C4 organization donations are considered gifts and are not tax deductible.

c)      CFA is required to provide an annual financial report which is available at the June Board meeting or can be requested through the CO.

7)      2007 CFA Director At Large (DAL) Elections

a)      How many candidates are declared for CFA DAL?  13

b)      What is deadline to declare?  March 15

c)      DAL Candidates:

i)        Incumbents: Joan Miller, Annette Wilson, Stan Barnaby, George Eigenhauser, and Liz Watson

ii)       Past Board Members:  Linda Berg

iii)     New Candidates:  Jan Rogers, David White, Pam Huggins, Sigfred Hauck, Karen Helmhold, Robert  Druzizsky, Roger Brown

d)      How many DALs are there?  7

Discussion on whether CFA needs 7 DALs.  Changing the number of DALs would require a constitutional amendment.

e)      What happens if you don’t vote for 7 DALs?  Your vote will not count.

Discussion that you should not have to vote for 7 DALs if you do not feel 7 are qualified.

f)        What is the job of a DAL?

i)        DAL focus on the needs of all of CFA rather than focusing on needs of each region.  They help prevent the Board from becoming too region focused.

ii)       All Board members are assigned committee jobs at the June Board meeting.  Current assignments are available in the June minutes from the Sunday meeting.

iii)     You do not have to be a board member to volunteer to help on a certain committee

iv)     All Board members provide CFA with additional free labor.  

g)      How many CFA board members?  19

h)      What are important qualities for a DAL?    

i)        Whether or not they are a judge

ii)       Length of time in CFA

iii)     Experience in CFA activities

iv)     Business experience

v)      Financial acumen

vi)     Team Player

vii)   Being know in all regions CFA Experience

viii)  For incumbents, what jobs they have done and how well they have done them

ix)      To promote a positive attitude
